Who was Hades?

The mightly Zeus, king of all the gods, had two brothers (and three sisters.) His brothers were Poseidon and Hades. Poseidon was lord of the seas. Hades ruled the Underworld. The Underworld was the place the ancient Greeks believed you went after you died. The Underworld was a big place. Some parts were really beautiful. That's where heroes went after they died. Some parts were not nice at all! You can guess who went there!

The other gods thought Hades was a gloomy fellow. But he wasn't really. He loved his toys. He was especially fond of his invisible helmet. . He was not married, but he was not lonely. He had his faithful companion, Cerberus (his three-headed dog) to keep him company. The mighty Zeus dropped down now and then. His nephew Hermes stopped by, when he needed his uncle's help to fix something. Hades attended meetings of the gods on Mount Olympus if the meeting was important enough. But mostly, Hades liked to stay in the Underworld. It was home. Hades was content. Nobody ever expected Hades to fall in love. With whom? Most of the people Hades met were dead.
